Update on US - India tariffs development

On Friday, February 6, 2026, President Trump issued an Executive Order to remove the additional 25% tariff linked to India's imports of Russian oil, which had been part of a total 50% duty on Indian goods the removal is effective for goods entered and cleared by Customs after February 7, 2026.   At the same time, on Friday, February 6, 2026, the White House issued a briefing on a US‑India Joint Statement announcing that they have reached a framework for an interim agreement regarding reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. Part of the agreement is that the United States will lower the reciprocal tariff on Indian goods to 18%, down from 25%, and will remove the reciprocal tariff on a wide range of goods identified elsewhere.

Timeline

1. Additional 25% tariff linked to India's imports of Russian oil: This tariff will be removed on goods entered after February 7, 2026, and refunds will be issued for any tariff paid after this date. As of today (February 9, 2026), the ACE system has still not been updated to reflect the removal of this tariff. Importers can file the entry with the extra 25% and file a Post Summery Correction for a refund until CBP issues a CSMS message updating the change in ACE.
2. Reciprocal tariff reduction to 18%: The full details of the trade agreement are still being worked out, and the reduction to 18% is part of an interim framework. It is pending an official executive order with an effective date, (which could be February 2nd when Trump announced on Truth Social "effective immediately,") or a later date when the executive order is issued.
