Revisions of the Section 232 Steel and Aluminum Tariff Exclusions Process

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce recently published an update to the Section 232 Steel and Aluminum Tariff Exclusions Process which will go into effect on July 1st, 2024, and we wanted to bring this to your attention.

BIS has revised the process for requesting exclusions from the duties and quantitative limitations on imports of aluminum and steel under Sec 232 based on public comments received on the NPRM (Notice of Proposed Rulemaking) that was published on August 28th, 2023.  12 General Approved Exclusions (GAEs) have been removed, therefore, items imported under the following HTS are subject to Sec 232 duties:

Steel GAEs:

  • 7208.38.0015
  • 7209.27.0000
  • 7209.90.0000
  • 7211.29.6080
  • 7216.10.0010
  • 7216.33.0090

Aluminum GAEs:

  • 7601.20.9080
  • 7604.21.0010
  • 7604.29.1010
  • 7604.29.5090
  • 7607.11.6010
  • 7609.00.0000
